Would you like to discover what happens behind the scenes at curling competitions, develop new skills and gain experience on the ice? Curling Québec is launching the Youth Umpire Program!

This new program is for young people who want to discover umpiring and progress at their own pace while gaining experience at championships organized by Curling Québec.

A Three-Level Program

The Youth Umpire Program is designed to support young participants as they progress, from their first experiences as a timekeeper to taking on their first responsibilities as a game umpire.

The program includes three levels:

• Level 1 – Getting Started: Participants discover the role of a timekeeper, learn how to enter scores and begin observing the work of game umpires.
• Level 2 – Participating: Young participants develop their independence as timekeepers, learn about measuring equipment and continue their learning by observing umpires on the ice.
• Level 3 – Developing: Participants put their learning into practice and begin working as game umpires under supervision. They also develop their skills in measuring and using the CurlDistance software.

Progress at Your Own Pace

There is no deadline to complete the different levels. Young participants can take part in as many championships as they wish and progress at their own pace.

As part of the program, they can participate in a maximum of two games per day at Curling Québec championships. They are supported by the chief umpire and integrated into the championship’s officiating team.

At the end of each level, an evaluation by the championship’s chief umpire helps assess the young participant’s progress, and a certificate of recognition is awarded to celebrate their achievement.

Ready to Take Your First Steps?

To begin Level 1, participants must be 12 years old and approved by Curling Québec.

The first step is to register for the program, then consult the championship calendar and choose the events you would like to participate in. You will then simply need to provide us with your availability so that we can integrate you into the championship’s officiating team.
