SWEEPING MORATORIUM – 2017-18
The World Curling Federation (WCF) and Curling Canada (CC) established a moratorium concerning sweeping rules and the use of specific broom heads in 2016. This moratorium will be effective until April 30, 2018 (see the full moratorium here). As Curling Québec supports both of these organizations which govern our sport on the national and international level, the moratorium will be applied as follows for the 2017-18 season:
The moratorium will be fully applied for the following events
- U18 provincial championship
- U21 provincial championship
- Junior mixed provincial championship
- Women’s provincial championship (Scotties)
- Men’s provincial championship (WFG Tankard)
- Senior women’s provincial championship
- Senior men’s provincial championship
- Women’s masters provincial championship
- Men’s masters provincial championship
- Mixed provincial championship
- Mixed doubles provincial championship
- East and West zones
- Circuit finals for men and senior men
- OVCA Qualification tournament
- Travelers provincial championship
- Regional qualifications
- Qualification tournaments for the U21 provincial championship
Level 3 officials will be on site and in charge of applying the moratorium rules for all of the above listed events, with the exception of the junior qualification tournaments and the regional qualifications. For these particular events, the players and the organizers will be informed by Curling Quebec that the moratorium will be in place prior to the start of the event.
The moratorium will therefore not be in effect for the following events, however the use of hair brooms will be strictly forbidden:
- All provincial circuit events for women, men, and senior men
- All juvenile circuit events
- Jeux du Québec and Inter-Jeux
- Club series provincial championships
- All colts circuit events
- Colts provincial championship
- Canada Games qualification tournaments
Details: Curling Québec recognizes the importance of these tournaments and championships and we want to ensure that they continue to run successfully. These events have always been open and accessible to teams who do not necessarily actively compete on a provincial circuit, or who do not want to play competitively on a regular basis. Their participation is very important to the survival of these events. The moratorium will therefore never be imposed during these events, however Curling Quebec strongly encourages teams to come to a mutual agreement before the start of each game and to apply the moratorium based on fair-play which has always reigned supreme in curling. Please note that no official complaints or protests concerning the moratorium may be submitted to Curling Quebec during these events.
